How to share exam results and scorecards with students and parents
Short answer
In MegaExams every submitted exam produces a scorecard, and you choose when students see it: immediately, after the exam closes, or when you click Release results. Students can share their scorecard as a link or a PDF, for example on WhatsApp, you can email parents a branded report card with a private link that needs no login, and you can download every result as CSV or PDF.
Sharing results well means three things: students see their score at the right moment, parents get a clear picture without chasing logins, and you keep a record. This guide covers all three, plus the privacy settings schools usually ask about.
Step by step: from submitted exam to shared results
-
Step 1: Choose when students see their score
Before publishing (or later, in Edit exam), open Results visibility and pick Immediately, After exam ends or When I release. Holding results until the exam ends stops early finishers from passing on answers, and gives you time to check written answers first.
-
Step 2: Decide what the result page shows
Tick Hide the question review after the exam if students should see only their score and performance summary. To show correct answers and explanations, turn on Show answer key to students, and set a release time if the key should appear later than the score.
-
Step 3: Finish any marking
Objective questions are scored on submit. Written answers get AI-suggested marks and feedback that you approve or change in the grading queue. If a key was wrong, fix it and use Regrade all attempts; for a faulty question, Marks and bonus gives everyone full marks.
-
Step 4: Release the results
On the exam page, click Release results now. Every student who has submitted can open their scorecard straight away, and later submitters see theirs as soon as they finish. If you released too early, Hold results hides them again.
-
Step 5: Let students share their scorecard
Each student's result page has Share on WhatsApp and Copy link buttons. The scorecard link opens a clean page with the exam, score, marks and rank, and your school's name and logo, plus a Download as PDF button. Parents can open it without an account.
-
Step 6: Send parents a report card
Add parent names and emails to your students under Students (one at a time or by importing a list). Open a student and choose Preview report to see a branded report card across all their exams, Download report for the PDF, or Send to parent to email a summary with a private link to the full history. You can revoke that link at any time. For a whole class, download one combined PDF from the group.
-
Step 7: Set up the leaderboard, if you use one
Choose a leaderboard that is Off, Anonymized (initials only) or shows Full names, and pick the columns: scores, city, class and school. Each student can always see their own score on their result page.
-
Step 8: Export a copy for your records
From the results page, download the results as CSV or PDF, or an answers CSV with one row per student and every answer with its marks. Filters you set on the results page, such as integrity, carry into the results CSV and PDF.
What students and parents see
The result page a student sees after submitting includes the score and percentage, rank, correct, wrong and skipped counts, a breakdown by section, and time spent per question compared with the top scorer. If the exam used negative marking, it also shows how many marks wrong answers cost.
The scorecard link is the short, shareable version: score, marks, rank and your branding, with a PDF download. It is designed for WhatsApp, and it shows a preview card when pasted into a chat.
The parent report card covers every exam the student has taken with you, with subject breakdowns, class and roll number, in your school's branding. See scorecards and analytics and rankings for screenshots.
Certificates for top students
For olympiads, scholarship tests and competitions, issue certificates from the exam page to the top students (for example the top 10) or to everyone at or above a score, then email them in one step. Each certificate has its own link and PDF, and you can revoke one if needed.
Privacy settings schools ask about
- Scorecard links can be switched off for the whole school in privacy settings. Students then see results only after signing in, and the share buttons disappear.
- Links are hard to guess. Each scorecard and parent link uses a long random token, and parent links can be revoked.
- Results stay hidden until released. When visibility is After exam ends or When I release, the scorecard link also stays closed until then.
- Selection without a ranking. For a selection test, you can tell each student only whether they were selected, instead of publishing a full ranking.

How do students get their exam results online?
They see their scorecard on screen after submitting if results are set to Immediately, or as soon as the teacher releases them. Students who signed in can also find past results in their account.
Can parents see results without creating an account?
Yes. Scorecard links and the private parent report link open in any browser with no login. The school can switch public scorecard links off if it prefers.
Can I hide scores until every student has finished?
Yes. Set Results visibility to After exam ends or When I release. Until then, students see only that their exam was submitted.
Can I download all results as a spreadsheet?
Yes. The results page exports a CSV of scores and a CSV of every answer, and a PDF of the results list.
Are scorecards and report cards free?
Yes. Scorecards, parent report cards, certificates and exports are free on every exam. MegaExams has no paid plans.
