How to create a mock test series for your coaching institute

Short answer

To create a mock test series, build each mock test as a timed exam with the same sections and marking scheme as the real exam, add the tests to one course, and choose how they unlock: on fixed dates, a set number of days after a student joins, after the previous test, or after a minimum score. Students join from one link or with an enrollment code, every test is scored instantly with ranks, and you follow each student and batch across the whole series.

A good test series does two jobs: it gets students used to the real exam pattern, and it shows you, test after test, who is improving and who is slipping. This guide builds both in MegaExams, which is free for coaching institutes, tutoring centres and schools, with no per-student fees.

Step by step: build the series

  1. Step 1: Plan the series

Decide the number of tests, the gap between them and the mix: chapter tests early, then part tests, then full-length papers near the exam. Note the real exam pattern: sections, number of questions, time per section and the marking scheme.

  2. Step 2: Build the first mock test to the exam pattern

Sign in at megaexams.com/register and create a new exam. Turn on Organize into sections and give each section its own timer if the real exam does; students then move through sections in order, and each locks when its time ends. Turn on Untimed section intro pages so reading the instructions does not eat into section time. Set marks, negative marks and Negative marking (see negative marking), and switch on the scientific calculator only where the real exam allows one.

  3. Step 3: Fill the questions quickly

Pick questions from your bank, filtered by subject, chapter and topic, or from the free library of ready-made papers. Import your existing papers from Word, Excel, CSV or PDF (see how to import questions), or let AI draft questions on a topic for you to edit. If you use board blueprints, the exam page can check the paper's marks distribution against one.

  4. Step 4: Create the rest of the tests from the first

Use Duplicate exam on the finished test and swap the questions, or, when starting a new exam, click Use these settings to copy the timer, attempts, marking, results, proctoring and sharing settings from your last exam. Every test in the series then behaves the same way.

  5. Step 5: Put the tests in a course

Open Courses, create a course for the series, and add the exams in order. A course can also hold video lectures and notes between tests, so one link carries the whole programme.

  6. Step 6: Choose how tests unlock

Pick an unlock strategy for the course: Sequential (finish one test to unlock the next), Score-based (reach a minimum percentage to unlock the next), Manual (you unlock per student) or Scheduled. With Scheduled, give each test a fixed unlock date, or a drip of a number of days after the student enrols, for example one test every 7 days.

  7. Step 7: Decide who can join

Leave the course open to Anyone with the link, or make it Private with an enrollment code so only your students get in. Add students under Students (you can import a list), put each batch in a group, and assign the course or individual tests to the group.

  8. Step 8: Share the course link

Send the course link, plus the enrollment code if it is private, on WhatsApp, email or your website. Students sign in with their email and work through the tests as they unlock.

  9. Step 9: Track results across the series

Each test gives instant scores and ranks. A group's progress page shows the class average over time and which students are trending down, each student's page shows their scores test by test with a printable report card, and you can email a reminder to only the students who have not attempted a test yet.

Ranks, leaderboards and certificates

Every result carries an overall rank, and students who add where they study can also see how they rank in their city and institution. For each test you choose what the leaderboard shows: off, anonymized (initials only) or full names, and whether scores, city and school appear. For a scholarship or selection test, you can mark selected students and tell everyone whether they were selected instead of showing a full ranking.

At the end of a test, issue certificates to the top students or to everyone at or above a score, and email them in one step. See analytics and rankings for more.

Make each mock feel like the real exam

  • Same navigation. Students get a question palette, Mark for review, and section-by-section timing, as in most computer-based exams.
  • Same pressure. Use a fixed schedule for full-length mocks so the whole batch writes together, and set one attempt.
  • Same scoring. Copy the official marking scheme, including negative marks and partial credit for multiple-correct questions.
  • Useful review. Release the answer key and explanations after the test closes, so students learn from every mistake without leaking answers to latecomers.

What about fees?

MegaExams is free for you and for your students, and it does not collect payments. If you charge for your test series, collect fees the way you already do, then give paying students the course's enrollment code or add them to the batch group. You keep the whole fee. Frequently asked questions

How do I create an online test series for free?

Build each mock test as an exam in MegaExams, add the tests to a course, and choose how they unlock: on dates, a few days after each student joins, after the previous test, or after a minimum score. Everything is free, with no per-student fees.

Can tests in a series unlock one by one?

Yes. Use the Sequential strategy to unlock a test after the previous one is done, Score-based to require a minimum percentage, Scheduled for fixed dates or a drip, or Manual to unlock per student.

Can I keep my test series private to my own students?

Yes. Make the course private with an enrollment code, or assign it only to your batch groups. Students without the code cannot open it.

Can students see their rank in each mock test?

Yes. Each result shows the student's rank, and you choose whether a leaderboard is off, anonymized or shows full names.

Can I charge students for the test series inside MegaExams?

No. MegaExams does not handle payments. Collect fees your usual way and give paying students the enrollment code.
