How negative marking works

+4

Correct Answer

Each correct MCQ answer earns you +4 marks in both JEE Main and NEET.

-1

Wrong Answer

Each wrong MCQ answer deducts 1 mark. This penalty discourages random guessing.

0

Unattempted

Questions left unanswered carry no marks and no penalty. Skip wisely.

How to use the negative marking calculator

The calculator turns an answer count into a score the same way an exam with negative marking does: marks for every correct answer, a deduction for every wrong one, and nothing for questions you leave blank.

  1. 1

    Pick the exam pattern

Choose JEE Main (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, 25 questions each) or NEET (Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, 45 questions each). Both use +4 for a correct answer and -1 for a wrong one. Choose Custom for any other test and type in your own marks per correct answer and deduction per wrong answer.

  2. 2

Enter correct and wrong answers per section

Count them from your answer key or response sheet. The calculator never lets correct plus wrong exceed the questions in a section, and works out unattempted questions for you.

  3. 3

Read your score, maximum and accuracy

You get a section-by-section breakdown, your total out of the maximum, and accuracy: correct answers as a share of the questions you attempted. Accuracy is the number to watch, because it tells you whether your guesses are helping or hurting.

  4. 4

Add or remove sections for custom tests

In Custom mode each section holds up to 25 questions. Add sections (for example Reasoning, Quant and English), rename them, and remove the ones you do not need, so the breakdown matches your paper.

Worked examples

JEE Main: 52 right, 13 wrong

  • •Physics: 18 correct, 4 wrong: 18 x 4 - 4 = 68
  • •Chemistry: 20 correct, 3 wrong: 20 x 4 - 3 = 77
  • •Mathematics: 14 correct, 6 wrong: 14 x 4 - 6 = 50
  • •Attempted 65 of 75, so accuracy is 52 / 65 = 80%

Score: 195 out of 300

NEET: 130 right, 20 wrong

  • •130 correct x 4 = 520 marks
  • •20 wrong x 1 = 20 marks deducted
  • •30 questions left blank score 0
  • •Accuracy: 130 / 150 attempted = 87% (rounded)

Score: 500 out of 720

Custom: +1 correct, -0.25 wrong

  • •A 100-question test: in Custom mode, use four 25-question sections
  • •70 correct x 1 = 70
  • •20 wrong x 0.25 = 5 deducted
  • •10 left blank score 0

Score: 65 out of 100

Is a blind guess worth it?

  • •With +4 / -1 and four options, a pure guess is right 1 time in 4
  • •Expected marks: 0.25 x 4 - 0.75 x 1 = +0.25 per guess
  • •Rule out one option and it rises to 1/3 x 4 - 2/3 x 1 = +0.67
  • •With +1 / -0.25, a blind guess is worth only +0.06

Guess only after eliminating options

Check the rules for your exam

Marking schemes change, and some papers treat question types differently, for example a numerical-answer section or a question with more than one correct option. Check the current information bulletin for your exam, then enter only the wrong answers that actually carry a penalty. The calculator applies the same deduction to every wrong answer you enter in a section.

Teachers can set the same scheme on a MegaExams test: turn on negative marking, choose the deduction, and every attempt is scored automatically when the student submits, with the same correct, wrong and unattempted breakdown shown on the scorecard.

Frequently asked questions

How is the score calculated? +

Score = (correct answers x marks per correct) - (wrong answers x deduction per wrong). Unattempted questions add nothing and cost nothing.

What is the maximum score? +

Total questions x marks per correct answer: 300 for the JEE Main preset (75 x 4) and 720 for the NEET preset (180 x 4).

What does accuracy mean here? +

Correct answers divided by attempted answers. High accuracy with fewer attempts often beats many attempts with low accuracy when wrong answers cost marks.

Do I need an account? +

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
